If you've been following along you'll know that I am in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic!
I wanted to do this post for a while now on How to Pack for a Tropical Vacation with only a carry-on sized suitcase! Over the years I've fine-tuned my packing process and it honestly has been a life saver. It takes some beforehand planning but it can be done and will even save you time and money.
Making a List.. And Checking it Twice!
The week before going on a vacation I make a list of the days we are going and the activities we have planned so that I can plan around that. Since we were going on a tropical vacation and the weather will be sunny and in the 80's every day I know I will pretty much be taking swim suits, coverups, outfits for each night, and any extra outfits for off-resort activities (such as ATV'ing).
If you know me you know that I LOVE making lists. The easiest way I found to do this is with excel so that you can move around your outfits versus writing it down. For each day, I will type "Swim Suit,", "Coverup,"and "Night-time" and then I will leave space at the bottom for "Miscellaneous" outfits and any items that I may tend to forget.
After you are done making your list print it out and check it off as you pack. Also if you want the list feel free to send me an email at SharanKaur@MyGoldenBeauty.com.
Maximize Space in Your Carry-On Luggage
I am super super super organized so I fold everything that goes into my suitcase. It makes taking things out easier. If you are tight on space rolling your clothes will make more room and will also prevent wrinkling. My husband took a carry-on size suitcase to Thailand for almost two weeks so this actually works!
I like to layer the bottom side (the side where it will become the bottom when you stand it up) for shoes and heavier items. I always pack shoes in plastic bags or dust bags so my shoes don't touch my clothing.
I usually limit large floppy hats to one and sometimes I will just wear it on the plane. It always helps when you're trying to nap so you can hide under it. The alternative is that you can stuff the middle part of the hat with soft items (such as underwear or swimsuits) so that it keeps its shape in your suitcase. That would be the last item to go into the suitcase so it keeps its shape.
Organize Your Suitcase
Organizing your suitcase is also key. Once I lay all my clothing out, I stack like items together. For instance, I'll fold and stack all my coverups together, shorts together, blouses together, etc. It makes packing and unpacking SO EASY! When I check into a resort I like to take all my clothing out of my suitcase and put them into the closets and drawers. It makes getting ready so much easier and that way you’re not digging around in your suitcase for items.
How to Store Important Documents
Keep all important documents and items - passport, license, money, jewelry, camera, etc. on you! I like to keep clothing in my carry on but put anything expensive in your purse/tote and keep it with you when you are traveling. Sometimes I'll even keep a few toiletries in my tote such as toothbrush, paste, etc. so I can freshen up quickly upon reaching my destination.
*Keep extra ziplock bags in your suitcase. Sometimes I tend to overfill my quart size bag.
*Store an extra plastic bag if your swimsuit is still wet you can throw it into that when you are leaving to come home.
* Wheeled luggage is best, since some Caribbean airports require you to deplane on the tarmac.
*Mix/match shoes and accessories to minimize space. Seriously shoes take up SO much room!
* Many resorts have good toiletrees. I would go crazy packing full size shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion, etc. but honestly there is no need. I would rather bring my own sunscreen, creams, etc things that are more expensive.
